چکیده
Purpose We conduct a hypothetical dictator game with social distance and time delays using conjoint analysis. Design / methodology / approach Responses from 1,347 Japanese adults are collected through an online survey, and their responses are analyzed using a random parameter logit model. Findings Social preference for the present income of a stranger equals social preference for the income of an acquaintance 140 days later, of a close friend 224 days later, and of a family member 255 days later. Originality / valueWe simultaneously estimate social preference parameters including the inequality aversion rate, the social discount rate, and the time discount rate Headings Inequality aversion, social discount, and time discount

The sample is 403 investors in Tehran Stock Exchange, and the nonparametric Tests are used to test the research hypotheses. The research results show that there is an asymmetr...
متن کاملSiblings, not triplets: social preferences for risk, inequality and time in discounting climate change
Arguments about the appropriate discount rate often start by assuming a Utilitarian social welfare function with isoelastic utility, in which the consumption discount rate is a function of the (constant) elasticity of marginal utility along with the (much discussed) utility discount rate. In this model, the elasticity of marginal utility simultaneously reflects preferences for intertemporal sub...
متن کاملJustifying social discounting: The rank-discounted utilitarian approach
The discounted utilitarian criterion for infinite horizon social choice has been criticized for treating generations unequally. We propose an extended rank-discounted utilitarian (ERDU) criterion instead. The criterion amounts to discounted utilitarianism on non-decreasing streams, but it treats all generations impartially: discounting becomes the mere expression of intergenerational inequality...

There is still much confusion about which discount rates should be used to evaluate actions having long-lasting impacts, as in the contexts of climate change, social security reforms or large public infrastructures for example. Contrary to the existing literature that focuses on the discount rate for safe projects, this paper characterizes the term structure of discount rates for investment pro...
متن کاملThe debate on discounting: Reconciling positivists and ethicists
Using a simple arbitrage argument, positivists claim that the interest rate provides the right basis to fix the discount rate to evaluate green investment projects. The real interest rate observed in the U.S. during the XXth century has been around 1% and 2%. On the contrary, ethicists estimate the discount rate by the marginal rate of substitution between current and future consumption. From c...
